<neurology> A acute condition involving sudden haemorrhage into the space between the arachnoid membrane and the pia mater (adjacent to the brain). Often secondary to a head injury or a blood vessel defect known as an aneurysm. The subarachnoid space also contains the cerebrospinal fluid.
