| streptozotocin | medical dictionary |
Methyl nitroso urea with a 2 substituted glucose, used as an antibiotic (effective against growing gram-positive and gram-negative organisms) and also to induce a form of diabetes in experimental animals (rapidly induces pancreatic B-cell necrosis if given in high-dose). By using multiple low doses in a particular strain of mice, it is possible to produce insulitis followed later by diabetes, a model for juvenile onset diabetes in humans.
