<zoology> A mammal having a single hoof on each foot, as the horses and asses; a solidungulate.

Alternative forms: solipede] "The solipeds, or firm-hoofed animals, as horses, asses, and mules, etc, they are, also, in mighty number." (Sir T. Browne)

Origin: Cf. F. Solipede, It. Solipede, Sp. Solipedo; apparently fr. L. Solus alone + pes, pedis, a foot; but probably fr. L. Solidipes solid-footed, whole-hoofed. See Solid, and Pedal.
