<cell biology> Peroxidase found in the lysosomal granules of myeloid cells, particularly macrophages and neutrophils, responsible for generating potent bacteriocidal activity by the hydrolysis of hydrogen peroxide produced in the metabolic burst) in the presence of halide ions. A metallo enzyme containing iron. Deficiency of myeloperoxidase is not fatal and it is reportedly absent entirely in chickens.
