modularisationeducation dictionary

<instructional design> A process whereby educational courses are split into self contained units or modules.

Students can pick and mix from a collection of units and acquire points for successful completion of each. These unit-points are then aggregated and can build up to a degree or some other qualification.

The emphasis is on flexibility, on maximising student choice and on the way credits can be given for all kinds of alternative entry qualifications. The modularisation of Higher Education courses is controversial.
