intussusceptionmedical dictionary

Intussusception refers to a telescoping of one portion of the intestine into another. This results in reduced blood supply to the affected portion of the intestine. Intussusception is seen almost exclusively in children between the ages of 5 months and 1 year. It is three times more common in boys and the exact cause is unknown. In older children, tumours and polyps can cause intussusception.
