<biochemistry> A type of lactic acid fermentation in which sugars (such as lactose, glucose, pentose) are converted entirely, or almost entirely, into lactic acid.
Compare: heterolactic fermentation. Both heterolactic and homolactic fermentation are done by lactic acid bacteria.
