<anatomy, surgery> The abnormal protrusion herniation of an organ or part of an organ, through an aperture in the surrounding structures. This commonly occurs with the protrusion of an abdominal organ through a defect in the abdominal wall.
Examples include inguinal hernia, femoral hernia and umbilical hernia.
