<embryology> During embryonic development of most animals a complex and co-ordinated series of cellular movements occurs at the end of cleavage. The details of these movements, gastrulation, vary from species to species, but usually result in the formation of the three primary germ layers, ectoderm, mesoderm and endoderm.
