A family of freshwater fish of the order salmoniformes, comprising the pikes, inhabiting the waters of the northern hemisphere. There is one genus, esox, with three species: one in eastern north america, one in siberia, one in the circumpolar region. Esox is from the greek isox, a fish, itself of celtic origin.
