<surgery> The heating of the body tissues due to their resistance to the passage of high-frequency electromagnetic radiation, electric currents or ultrasonic waves. In medical diathermy (thermopenetration) the tissues are warmed but not damaged, in surgical diathermy (electrocoagulation) tissue is destroyed.
