<plant biology> Waxy hydrophobic substance deposited on the surface of plants. Composed of complex long chain fatty esters and other fatty acid derivatives. Impregnates the outer wall of epidermal cells and also forms a separate layer, the cuticle, on the outer surface of the epidermis.
