<biochemistry> Major components of the extracellular matrix and connective tissue of animals, found on the outside of the cell membranes of some animal cells.
They are repeating polymers of glucuronic acid and sulphated N acetyl glucosamine residues that are highly hydrophilic and anionic. Found in association with proteins.
