<pharmacology> These are substances which which act to inhibit acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme which breaks down acetylcholine and thus enhance and subsequently prevent transmission of nerve impulses from one nerve cell to another or to a muscle.
Examples include pyridostigmine, ambenonium and neostigmine.
