A broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis in prokaryotes and in mitochondria and chloroplasts by acting on the 50S ribosomal subunit.
It was first isolated from the fungus like bacterium Streptomyces venezuelae but is now produced synthetically. It is relatively toxic but finds wide application in medicine.
