<respiratory medicine> Fibrosis of the lung due to the inhalation of asbestos fibres. Typically occurs 15-20 years after exposure and can lead to the development of malignant mesothelioma.
The asbestos fibres are phagocytosed by alveolar macrophages but produce a chronic inflammatory reaction.
