medical dictionary

The cellular unit of the central and peripheral nervous systems.

An excitable cell specialised for the transmission of electrical signals over long distances. Neurones receive input from sensory cells or other neurones and send output to muscles or other neurones. Neurones with sensory input are called sensory neurones, neurones with muscle outputs are called motoneurones, neurones that connect only with other neurones are called interneurones. Neurones connect with each other via synapses. Neurones can be the longest cells known, a single axon can be several metres in length. Although signals are usually sent via action potentials, some neurones are nonspiking.
