Formation of an acid and an alcohol by the simultaneous oxidation of one aldehyde molecule and reduction of another; a dismutation: 2RCHO → RCOOH + RCH2OH; when the aldehydes are not identical, this is referred to as a crossed Cannizzaro reaction.
