Commonest species of Babesia in western and central Europe, causing a disease of cattle similar to that produced by Babesia bovis; vector tick is Ixodes ricinus; it has caused human babesiosis in splenectomised individuals in France, Ireland, Scotland, Croatia, Georgia, a part of the former Soviet Union, and Sweden; also found in reindeer.
