<cell biology> 5-nucleotidase is a liver enzyme that can be measured in the bloodstream. It can be a specific indicator for liver disease when it is elevated.
The normal value is 0 to 1.6 U/L (units per litre). 5-nucleotidase can be elevated in cholestasis, hepatic ischaemia, liver necrosis, liver tumour, hepatitis and the use of hepatotoxic drugs. The assay is performed on a venipuncture specimen.
