This all came about in the 1990s with something called Project 2000.

It is interesting at the time training as a medical student moved from the classroom on to the wards, whilst nurses moved from the wards into the classroom.

Try searching nursing sites (esp. in the UK) for 'project 2000'.

Sending back nurses back intro the classroom is good because it will help the nurses refresh their knowledge. It can also be a form of updating them to new technologies. While nursing students are given first hand experience in the hospital to learn real knowledge about nursing.

Actually I don't have any idea about that question, but historically, nursing education has its roots in hospital schools of nursing and technical colleges. It served us well as these programs graduated hundreds of thousands of qualified nurses who were trained to work primarily in hospitals and other health care institutions. Our challenge in nursing education is simple, to create a new generation of nurses and nursing faculty who can offer students fresher ways of thinking about the nature of nursing. From one generation to the next, from past to the future, we are inspired by how beautifully simple is the art and yet how incredibly complex is the science of nursing.
